‘BANNED’ Baj Gayi?

A month long debate is now hitting public consciousness with a vengeance. By banning pornographic websites, the Indian government not only violated the rights, but also left no scope of objection for its citizens.

Lack of transparency in governance, incessant bans, forcing their judgments on people without any prior notification are not welcomed changes for Indian audiences. The porn ban intensified frustration and anger in the minds of the individuals, since they were suddenly forced to repress their sexual expression. Well, I agree that certain kind of pornographic content can influence young minds in a wrong way, but, most of it is harmless eroticism.

It is indeed ironic that India, which gave the world Kamasutra, is in fact a sex-phobic country and we are prohibited to even dialogue about it. I believe, the Government should create awareness on the influence of porn and how it leads to increase in crime and other socially unacceptable acts, at the same time making sure that they are respecting the right of people to engage in whatever they want to privately.

Enacting laws that carry mandatory warnings may help viewers to get better understanding of the acts that are filmed and will help build a public perception towards a consensual view on sexuality on a whole. We need to get a healthier view on sexuality and for that, we need practical techniques to make it possible. Banning is just not the answer and if the angry Indians lash out their anger, the government will be forced to revoke such bans anyway!
